Linfield College was named to the 2010 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. This is the third consecutive year that the school has been included.
The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), which administers the honor roll, named Linfield a leader among institutions of higher education for its support of volunteering, service-learning and civic engagement.
“Community engagement is a cornerstone of a Linfield College education,” said Jessica Wade, director of Community Engagement and Service. “Linfield students meet important community needs while applying concepts learned in the classroom.”
Last year more than 950 students participated in community-based activities, dedicating more than 43,000 hours of service to organizations in the McMinnville community and elsewhere. Their primary focus was housing and food security, at-risk youth and educational equality, and environmental sustainability.
Linfield students tutored children in area classrooms, staffed afterschool programs, participated in literacy initiatives and coordinated physical education programs for youth. To address poverty, students served at the local soup kitchen and in transitional housing shelters, and assisted with Yamhill County’s 10-Year Ending Homelessness Plan. Students also initiated sustainability initiatives, including the distribution of more than 3,000 compact fluorescent light bulbs to area residents, saving McMinnville more than 150,000 watts of power.
“As the class of 2011 crosses the stage to pick up their diplomas, more and more will be going into world with a commitment to public service and the knowledge that they can make a difference in their community, thanks to the leadership of these institutions,” said Patrick Corvington, chief executive officer of CNCS. “Congratulations to Linfield College and its students for their commitment to improving their local communities.”
