ALOHA, Oregon – Hundreds of Linfield University alumni, supporters and friends gathered at The Reserve Vineyards and Golf Club this week for the annual Wildcat Open, continuing a tradition that dates back more than 30 years.
The scramble-format tournament allowed teams of four to enjoy lunch, play 18 holes of golf and then settle in for a dinner and auction to support Linfield’s 23 athletic teams. Though final fundraising figures will take time to calculate, Athletic Director Garry Killgore said the event was successful as ever. He said 138 golfers registered to play this year, and the goal was to raise at least $50,000 to support student-athletes through the TopCat booster club.
“Linfield has a tradition of excellence in athletics,” he said, adding that around 40% of students play at least one sport. “We see so many familiar faces at the Wildcat Open each year. Some teams have played together for a decade or more, and we’re so grateful for their support.”
Alumnus Emily (Keagbine) Connor ’11, who was part of Linfield softball team’s NCAA Division III National Championship in 2011, said this was her third or fourth Wildcat Open and a highlight of the summer.
“Today was awesome,” she said. “I love coming back with my old teammates and reminiscing, and talking about our new lives together. Plus, we get a chance to see Jackson (Vaughan), our old coach.”
She said she also appreciates the opportunity to help current Linfield students.
“I love supporting Linfield athletics, because it was such an important time in my own life,” she said. “I like to give back and give those same opportunities to other people.”
