Linfield Chamber Orchestra kicks off 20th Anniversary Season

September 28, 2010 by Linfield News Team

By Linfield News Team

Season tickets are now available for the 20th Anniversary Season of the Linfield Chamber Orchestra (LCO).

The upcoming season will feature the world premiere of an orchestral piece especially commissioned for LCO by one of the world’s most sought-after composers, Libby Larsen. Two guest-artist concerts and three orchestra concerts, including a performance by the winners of the biennial student concerto competition, will also be presented.

A collaboration of the Linfield College Department of Music and the community, the McMinnville-based orchestra now attracts world-renowned guest artists and professional musicians from across Oregon and southwest Washington.

LCO provides aspiring Linfield College students the opportunity to rehearse and perform alongside seasoned musicians, and every year since 2004, fourth-grade children in Yamhill County schools have been introduced to classical music through a youth concert presented especially for them.

Conductor Michael Gesme, who also conducts the Central Oregon Symphony in Bend, is in his seventh season with the orchestra.

“The chamber orchestra adds vitality to our community arts scene,” said Board President Nora Stevens. “The group not only provides great classical performances, but has also introduced thousands of local children to the classical tradition.

“Not all Yamhill County elementary schools offer band or orchestra classes,” she said, “so the concerts provide a valuable way to help youth find new avenues for artistic expression.

“The power and beauty of classical music deepens the human experience for all of us,” Stevens said.

Season subscriptions are $110 for reserved seating and $80 for general admission. Single reserved tickets are $25 with the exception of the Libby Larsen World Premiere Concert, which is $30. General admission is $18 and $23, and $5 for K-12 students. All concerts this season will be held in Ice Auditorium in Melrose Hall on the McMinnville Campus of Linfield College.
