Award-winning poet Chris Howell to visit Linfield

October 4, 2010 by Linfield News Team

By Linfield News Team

Chris HowellThree decades of work will be encompassed in a reading by award-winning poet Chris Howell Thursday, Oct. 14, at 7:30 p.m. in the Austin Reading Room of the Jereld R. Nicholson Library at Linfield College.

Howell will read from his new book “Dreamless and Possible.” This volume of new and selected poetry spans over three decades of Howell’s work, and draws from all of his previous books. The book covers Howell’s wide range of interests, combining elements of the surreal with biography and imagist economy with a storyteller’s informality. It also shows the development of Howell’s signature style over the years. Howell thinks out loud as he works his way through what charms, challenges and defines the human project.

Howell, professor of English and creative writing at Eastern Washington University, attended Pacific Lutheran University where he began to write poetry. He was a Navy journalist during the Vietnam War and afterward earned his graduate degrees from Portland State University and the University of Massachusetts. Howell has published eight books of poetry, the most recent, “Light’s Ladder.” He has received the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships Award twice and the Washington State Book Awards twice. Howell has also been included in the Pushcart Prize Anthology three times.

The lecture is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by the Linfield English Department, Office of the President and Friends of Nicholson Library. For more information, contact Susan Barnes Whyte, college librarian, at 503-883-2517, swhyte@linfield.edu.
