Linfield marketing students go to the dogs

November 18, 2010 by Linfield News Team

By Linfield News Team

Three service dogs and students in Professor Michelle Nelson’s marketing class greeted football fans at a recent game, helping raise money for Canine Assistants. The national non-profit organization trains and provides service dogs for children and adults with physical disabilities or other special needs. The service is provided free of charge, which is where Linfield students came in.

Professor Nelson’s class wanted to get a first-hand look at public relations, event management and fundraising.

They offered raffle tickets for theme baskets: pets, sports, wine, Linfield College and the downtown historical district, 3rd Street. After the totals were in, students had raised $747 for Canine Assistants.

Nelson, the regional NOAH‘s Team Leader for Canine Assistants, threw in an extra donation to make it an even $1,000.

Proceeds from their fundraiser will help place a service dog with a local resident in need.

“It’s very motivating to work hard and put on an event for such a great organization, knowing your work will go to help people who really need it,” says business student Jacob Nolte ’12.

“The students did an amazing job raising money for a good cause while learning a lot about real world marketing,” says Nelson. “They also learned about the great need for trained service dogs and the incredible help these dogs provide to people.”
