Linfield offers a February of arts, athletics and wine

January 31, 2025 by Kathy Foss

By Kathy Foss

Activity at Linfield University returns in February with a series of public events, as well as the start of the spring semester on Feb. 10. Several university departments host events throughout the month that are free and open to the public.

Feb. 7-8: The 89th annual Singletary High School Invitational

One of the largest OSAA debate tournaments in the state, the 89th annual Singletary High School Invitational, returns to Linfield on Feb. 7-8. Events will run 10 a.m. through 6:30 p.m. Friday and 7:15 a.m. through 7:30 p.m. Saturday, with events focused in Dillin, Walker, and T.J. Day halls. For more information, contact Jackson Miller, professor of communication arts.

Feb. 9: “Second Sunday Pop-Up” at Acorn to Oak Wine Experience

Guest get wine poured in a glass while manager Paul Johnson looks on.

Enjoy a free tasting from Coeur de Terre Vineyard and Patton Valley Wines from 12-6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 9 at Acorn to Oak Wine Experience (546 NE 3rd Street). Representatives from the wineries will be sharing an exclusive list of their wines. Bottles will be available for purchase directly from each winery.

Feb. 12-March 15: Linfield Gallery presents Travis Johnson: “Toxic Gods & Black Fairytales”

The Linfield Gallery welcomes Travis Johnson, a cross-disciplinary artist who leans on painting, sculpture and performance to express and distill his reexamination of a rural black aesthetic. He is interested in the poetic, philosophical and practical relationship between material, the body and subsistence. Johnson leans on the whimsical and cartoon iconography as a staple and references in his work the imprint that religion and labor have on the diasporic fragmented body. Johnson is currently a visiting assistant professor of painting and drawing at Willamette University.

An opening reception featuring remarks and a vocal performance from Johnson is at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 12. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and noon to 5 p.m. Saturday.

This exhibition is sponsored by the Lacroute Arts Series and the Department of Art.

Feb. 21: Kids Cheer and Dance Camp

The Linfield Cheer and Dance Teams, together with the Young Cats Club, are hosting a free Camp and Performance session for children ages 5-12 on Friday, Feb. 21, 2025, in association with two regular-season basketball games at Ted Wilson Gymnasium. The event runs 4:30-6 p.m., with performances at halftime of the men’s and women’s basketball games at approximately 6:40 and 8:40 p.m. Camp participants, and up to two accompanying chaperones, will receive free admission to the basketball games. Each child will also receive a free Young Cats Club t-shirt and autograph book. Register online at golinfieldwildcats.com.

Feb. 26: Film Music of William Campbell

Linfield Collaborative Music Ensemble with instruments

The Linfield Collaborative Music Ensemble performs the film music of William Campbell, associate professor chair of the Department of Music, at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 26. The event will be held in the Delkin Recital Hall, inside the Vivian Bull Music Center. Campbell has earned many accolades for his music, including a best score nomination for a Mid-American Emmy and music composed for two Oscar-nominated films.

The seven-person ensemble will be in residence at Linfield this semester for the Lacroute Composer Readings and Chamber Music Mentorship Program. They will mentor student composers as they write music for short films during this semester, culminating in a spring concert.

Feb. 27: Readings at the Nick: Zoë Bossiere

Join critically acclaimed author Zoë Bossiere at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 27 in Nicholson Library for a reading from “Cactus Country: A Boyhood Memoir.” Shelf Awareness calls the book, “gorgeously written, thoughtful, and tough. This memoir of gender and a hardscrabble coming-of-age in the American Southwest excels at nuance.” Bossiere is the managing editor of “Brevity: A Journal of Concise Literary Nonfiction,” as well as the coeditor of two anthologies: “The Best of Brevity and The Lyric Essay as Resistance: Truth from the Margins.” Author Q&A to follow.
