Linfield Center for the Northwest provides hands-on learning

March 25, 2011 by Linfield News Team

The Linfield center gives a new twist on how learning happens, at college and in the community. At LCN, learning goes beyond traditional books, lectures and theory. Here, students can get their hands dirty by trapping insects or digging through boxes of historical papers.

They can also get a taste of what life will be like after college, whether they go on to graduate school or join the work force. In between, the local community gets to use faculty expertise and student elbow grease to meet their own needs. It’s a learning process for everyone involved.

This year the center sponsored Bringing Vines to the Valley, a collaborative research project funded by the Erath Family Foundation and a pilot project for the anticipated Oregon Wine History Project. Bringing Vines to the Valley has chronicled the story of early winemakers in the Willamette Valley.

Project collaborators include sociology Professor and center Director Jeff Peterson, anthology Professor Keni Sturgeon and history professor Lissa Wadewitz, along with students Dulce Kersting ’11, Sara Juergensen ’11 and Barrett Dahl ’11.

The center also funded the research of biology Professor Chad Tillberg. His research about invasive ants in Oregon was featured in Linfield Magazine and on video (A Bug’s Life).
