Economics prof comments on BCS championship in Oregonian

January 5, 2011 by Linfield News Team

Does the Ducks’ athletic prowess boost the University of Oregon brand? Ask Professor Randy Grant.

A front-page Oregonian story carried the quotes of economics professor Randy Grant, who co-authored The Economics of Intercollegiate Sports.

He commented on the upcoming Ducks’ game, to be held Jan. 10. UO administrators told The Oregonian they expect a multi-million dollar windfall from the media value of the exposure.

But Grant says that athletic wins don’t necessarily lead to more philanthropic support or greater student recruitment.

Grant’s book addresses the rising costs of collegiate sports, the tension between academics and sports, links between athletic success and enrollment or donations, and reform of college sports. He also co-authored The Evolution of Economic Thought.
