Study abroad students search for a global perspective

February 25, 2011 by Linfield News Team

Washington’s Sammamish Review profiled Lian Yuen ’11 and Johnna Furcini ’11, who studied abroad as part of January Term courses taught by business Professor Michelle Nelson and nursing Professors Fred Calixtro and Sherry Archer.

Not many college students get study credits for zooming down ziplines in Argentina, walking among hoards of Antarctic penguins or helping orphans in Cameroon, the Review said.

Furcini (pictured) and Yuen were among 111 Linfield students who took their studies abroad.

Yuen and her classmates explored the impact of ecotourism on Argentina in Nelson’s course, conducting interviews with tourists, locals and scientific experts. They also visited national parks, research stations, glaciers and penguin rookeries.

Furcini gained a new appreciation for world health after working in Cameroon villages.
She and her classmates conducted health checks in rural villages and taught locals about AIDS and malaria prevention.

Yuen is majoring in athletic training. She is a member of Linfield women’s varsity soccer, the Alpha Lambda Delta honor society and the Hawaiian Club.

Furcini is majoring in nursing. She is the executive editor of the Vital Statistics newsletter and the treasurer of Nursing Students Without Borders.

The Institute of International Education ranked Linfield 21st among U.S. baccalaureate institutions for participation in study abroad, with 72 percent of all Linfield students studying abroad, for January Term, a semester or a year.
