Linfield University has hired Christopher “Chris” Nelson, Ph.D., as its new director of grants and sponsored research. He brings more than 20 years of experience in higher education, faculty development and research leadership. Nelson began his role on Monday, Feb. 9.

Nelson joins Linfield from the University of North Dakota, where he most recently served as dean of the School of Graduate Studies. In that role, he led strategic initiatives to support faculty success, expand graduate education and strengthen research infrastructure.

Before becoming dean, Nelson held several leadership roles at UND. These included associate dean, acting dean and director of graduate studies. He also spent many years as a faculty member in the Department of English, where he taught undergraduate and graduate courses and mentored students and colleagues.

“I am excited to join Linfield University and look forward to meeting and working with everyone across campus,” Nelson said. “Building quality relationships with faculty, staff, administrators and external partners is my first priority. I am eager to get started and assist Linfield in meeting its strategic goals.”

Nelson has extensive experience working with external partners, national organizations and funding agencies. His work has focused on building collaborative partnerships, supporting grant development and advancing sponsored research. He has also served in leadership roles with the Council of Graduate Schools, including as a board member and executive committee member.

“Chris brings a deep understanding of research administration and faculty support,” said Joseph Hunter, vice president for university advancement. “His experience and collaborative approach will help strengthen Linfield’s capacity for sponsored research and external funding.”

Nelson earned his doctorate in English from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. His academic work has focused on American literature, critical theory and interdisciplinary scholarship.
