Araceli Cruz ’09 (she/her/ella) has been appointed interim assistant dean of student engagement, community and belonging at Linfield University. She begins her role Feb. 23 and will oversee the Offices of Community and Belonging, Student Activities, Service Leadership, Residence Life and Housing, as well as the Chaplain’s Office.

A proud Linfield alumnus, Cruz brings more than a decade of experience in higher education. She has held senior leadership roles at Portland State University as assistant vice president of global diversity and inclusion and at Warner Pacific University as assistant vice president of student success and engagement. In these positions, she led institution-wide initiatives that focused on student engagement, belonging, persistence and holistic development.

Cruz also served previously in student support roles at Linfield. That experience gave her a deep understanding of the campus community and the student experience.

“Araceli’s return to Linfield is a tremendous benefit for our community. She brings a wealth of experience in student engagement and a passion for creating spaces where students can learn, lead and belong,” said Jeff Mackay, vice president for student affairs and dean of students. “I’m excited for the energy and vision she will bring to the university.”

Her work focuses on building inclusive, community-centered programs that help students feel seen, supported and connected. She pays particular attention to first-generation and historically underrepresented students. Through this work, Cruz demonstrates her commitment to educational equity and student well-being—values that align closely with Linfield’s mission.

“I am honored to return to my alma mater, a place that shaped my journey and continues to transform students’ lives. Linfield’s close-knit, relationship-centered community ensures students are truly known and supported. The deep care faculty and staff bring to their work reflects more than a profession; it is a calling,” Cruz said. “I look forward to building on this strong foundation, expanding student engagement efforts and partnering with our community to ensure every student feels supported, connected and empowered to thrive.”

Cruz earned her Bachelor of Arts in sociology and Spanish at Linfield. She went on to complete a master’s degree in student affairs administration at Lewis & Clark College.
