Linfield homecoming events planned

September 28, 2011 by Linfield News Team

By Linfield News Team

A series of homecoming events for students and alumni are planned the week of Oct. 3 at Linfield College.

Student activities begin Tuesday, Oct. 4, at 5 p.m. with relay races on the Riley intramural field. On Thursday, Oct. 6, a campus-wide barbeque with a song and banner competition will be held at 5 p.m., also on the IM field. On Friday, Oct. 7, at 8 p.m. the Mr. and Miss Linfield competition will be held in the Richard and Lucille Ice Auditorium in Melrose Hall. Cost is $2 or two cans of food benefitting YCAP. Students will host a purple-out, wearing purple in support of the Wildcats during the Homecoming football game vs. Puget Sound on Saturday, Oct. 8, at 1:30 p.m. Student homecoming events will conclude Saturday with a movie night at 9 p.m. in Ice Auditorium.

Registration for alumni activities begins Friday, Oct. 7, at 11 a.m. in Fred Meyer Lounge in Riley Hall. The Founders’ Society Luncheon will take place in Jonasson Hall, lower level of Melrose Hall, at noon. Alumni are also invited to attend a faculty panel at 2 p.m. in Ice Auditorium featuring Linfield professors who are also alumni. Panelists include Bill Mackie, class of 1971; Martha (Barbee) Van Cleave, class of 1975; Stephen Bricher, class of 1986; and Sarah (Krueger) Coste, class of 1990. Dave Hansen, professor of economics, will moderate.

Lora Koenig, class of 1999 and recipient of the Outstanding Young Alumna Award, will give a presentation at 3:30 p.m. in Nicholson Library. Koenig is a NASA scientist and will discuss the current state of the polar ice sheets, reflecting on how her career path began during a January Term class at Linfield.

“Linfield’s Finest,” a gathering for alumni, friends and faculty, will salute the alumni awards winners at 5:15 p.m. at the McMinnville Grand Ballroom. In addition to Koenig, Hal Gibson, class of 1959, and T.J. Day, class of 1971, will be honored. Gibson will receive the Alumni Service Award for his dedication to connecting alumni for over 50 years, hosting gatherings and spearheading fundraising efforts for Linfield. Day will receive the Distinguished Alumnus of the Year award for his generosity and leadership to Linfield and other organizations.

Alumni events continue on Saturday, Oct. 8, with registration starting at 9:15 a.m. and campus tours beginning at 9:30 a.m. At 10 a.m., the alumni of Kappa Alpha Phi will gather in Ford Hall for tea with fellow sorority members. At 10:30 a.m., the dedication to the new T.J. Day Hall, formerly Northup Hall, will be held. An all-alumni barbeque begins at 11:30 a.m. in the parking area of the Vivian A. Bull Music Center, followed by the Linfield Wildcats vs. the University of Puget Sound Loggers football game at 1:30 p.m.
