Day of service to honor King

January 5, 2012 by Linfield News Team

By Linfield News Team

Pioneer HallLinfield College students and Yamhill County youth will join together for a day of service to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Monday, Jan. 16, at Linfield College.

The day will feature a project to increase healthcare access for Yamhill County homeless residents, and will also include a College Access Day to increase college aspirations among high school youth.

Under the mentorship of Linfield students, more than 80 Yamhill County junior high and high school students will take part in the day, which includes sessions on preparing for college, peer consulting and financial aid. The cornerstone of the event is a community service project during which students will compile hygiene supplies and healthcare resource cards into kits for the homeless.

The day of service is a way to integrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s life and teachings into community service that helps solve social problems, said Jason Rodriquez, director of multicultural programs at Linfield.

“Linfield hopes to involve and empower students and community members and inspire civic engagement while honoring the life of Dr. King,” Rodriquez said.
