Richard H. Waring, distinguished emeritus professor of forest ecology at Oregon State University, will speak on the effects of climate change Wednesday, Feb. 29, at 7:30 p.m. in the Richard and Lucille Ice Auditorium in Melrose Hall at Linfield College.
Waring will present “Effects of Climate Change on our Forests and Options for the Future.” He is the author of numerous publications, including “Forest Ecosystems: Concepts and Management.” His research focuses on environmental change on forest productivity and biodiversity across landscapes and regions.
Waring began his distinguished career as a research assistant at the Quetico-Superior Wilderness Research Center in 1953. He went on to earn a master’s degree in forestry from the University of Minnesota and a Ph.D. in botany with a minor in soils from the University of California, Berkeley, joining the faculty at OSU in 1963. In addition to working within the OSU School of Forestry until 2001, Waring worked with NASA and conducted research during sabbaticals in Canberra, Australia, Edinburgh, Scotland, Innsbruck, Austria, and Uppsala, Sweden.
The lecture is sponsored by the Jane Claire Dirks-Edmunds Lectureship Fund. The lecture series honors Dr. Dirks-Edmunds, a professor of biology at Linfield from 1941 to 1974. The endowment is used to bring speakers to campus to address critical environmental concerns and biological issues, and to support student-faculty collaborative research. Dirks-Edmunds recognized the importance of ecological issues and humanity’s impact on nature long before environmental issues became part of the public agenda.
