Greenlees to speak on cultural differences in business

February 21, 2012 by Linfield News Team

By Linfield News Team

Malcolm Greenlees, the Glenn L. and Helen S. Jackson professor of business, will present “Culture, Countries and Casinos” on Wednesday, Feb. 29, at 3 p.m. in Jonasson Hall at Linfield College.

Greenlees will discuss the differences in business between Southeast Asia and the United States. He will also address how cultural differences affect gaming in casinos, why Macau’s casino revenue has become five times the size of the Las Vegas strip and how Singapore has exceeded the strip in just two years.

“I’m blown away by the tremendous differences in culture,” said Greenlees, who will present a photo slideshow along with his talk. “Each country has something very unique about it. Different cultures simply play different games.”

Greenlees came to Linfield in 1984 when he began teaching courses in managerial accounting, cost accounting, auditing and other related topics. He holds a Ph.D. in accounting from the University of Washington. In addition to teaching, he is also the author of several books and articles dealing with economics and financial management including “Casino Accounting and Financial Management.” He is the recipient of the Outstanding Educator for Oregon Award and the Linfield College International Ambassador Award.

The event is sponsored by the Linfield International Programs Office. It is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Michele Tomseth at ipo@linfield.edu or 503-883-2434.
