For the third consecutive year, Linfield students won top spots in the highly competitive Japanese language speech contest. Winners included Ariel Lillico ’12, Leah Sedy ’12 and Lucian Battaglia ’12.
The annual Toyama Cup Speech Contest, held annually since 1996, is co-sponsored by the Toyama Prefectural Government of Japan and the Japan-America Society of Oregon, and is open to Oregon college students who are studying Japanese.
Three Linfield students, all senior Japanese majors, participated in Level 2 this year. Battaglia received the Encouragement Award, while Sedy received Third Prize and Lillico received Second Prize. This is the third year in a row in which Linfield students won two of the top three spots in this division.
Level 2 participants have studied Japanese at a college or university for more than two years and lived and studied in Japan.
Japanese language at Linfield College is taught by Professors Christopher Keaveney and Masayuki Itomitsu. Keaveney also taught Japanese at the Oregon State Penitentiary this spring, a class which culminated in a performance by Linfield Taiko.
