ORR TO DISCUSS GENDER RESEARCH
Amy Orr, associate professor of sociology at Linfield College, will discuss “Gendered Capital: Sex-Role Socialization and the ‘Boy Crisis’ in Education,” on Wednesday, Oct. 14, at 7:30 p.m. in 201 Riley Hall at Linfield.
Orr’s research looks at the effect of gender on teacher assessments in kindergarten. The goal of the study was to understand why girls receive higher marks than boys, despite scoring lower on a number of standardized tests. Orr argues that parents encourage the development of behavior dispositions in their children through direct interaction. For instance, girls are more likely than boys to engage in stereotypical “female” activities, to exhibit positive social behavior and to have positive attitudes about school. Orr explains that these factors have positive effects on grades.
The lecture will include the general results of her research and a discussion of the role of teacher evaluation criteria in the process.
Orr received her bachelor’s degree from Nebraska Wesleyan University and both her master’s and Ph.D. at the University of Notre Dame. Orr teaches courses at Linfield on a variety of topics including gender, sociology of education, race and ethnicity, research methods and social policy. Her research focus is primarily on educational inequality.
The lecture is free and open to the public. The Linfield College faculty lecture series offers one presentation each month by a member of the Linfield faculty. For more information call 503-883-2409.
CHIN READING ON TAP AT “THE NICK”
Award-winning poet and novelist Marilyn Chin will present her latest novel, “Revenge of the Mooncake Vixen,” and poetry on Thursday, Oct. 15, at 7:30 p.m. in the Austin Reading Room in the Jereld R. Nicholson Library at Linfield. Chin will also visit creative writing classes to discuss their works during her visit.
Chin’s previous novels include “Rhapsody in Plain Yellow,” “Dwarf Bamboo” and “The Phoenix Gone, the Terrace Empty.” Her newest addition, “Revenge of the Mooncake Vixen,” is a tale of two Chinese-American girls’ coming of age and the complexities of ethnic identity in America’s melting pot. Chin explores the way generational differences both hinder and enrich a deeper understanding of one’s heritage.
Chin was born in Hong Kong and raised in Portland. Her books have become Asian-American classics and are taught in classrooms internationally. Awards for her writing include the United Artist Foundation Fellowship, the Radcliffe Institute Fellowship at Harvard, the Rockefeller Foundation Fellowship at Bellagio, two NEAs, the Stegner Fellowship, the
PEN/Josephine Miles Award, four Pushcart Prizes and a Fulbright Fellowship to Taiwan.
Chin was featured in Bill Moyers’ PBS series “The Language of Life,” and has been a guest poet at universities around the world including Beijing, Hong Kong, Manchester, Sydney and Berlin. Chin currently teaches in the Master of Fine Arts program at San Diego State University.
The lecture is sponsored by the Linfield English Department, Office of the President and Friends of Nicholson Library. For more information, contact Susan Barnes Whyte, college librarian, at 503-883-2517, swhyte@linfield.edu.
McMENAMINS ARTISTS TO SHOW WORK
“After Hours,” an exhibition of the private work of the McMenamins artists, will be on display Oct. 13 through Nov. 21 at the Linfield College Fine Art Gallery.
For over 20 years, a group of local artists have been lending and amending their styles to suit the walls of a growing cluster of bars, hotels and movie theaters in Oregon and Washington. These people always seem to have a private stash of paintings and other projects they’ve done on their own time, for their own enjoyment. Linfield Gallery has assembled a temporary collection of these works.
The Linfield Gallery will exhibit the paintings, prints, sculptures and mixed media works by Lyle Hehn, a former student of the Linfield Art Department, Jenny Joyce, Cathie Joy Young, Myrna Yoder, Joe Cotter, Olivia Behm, Isaka Shamsud-Din and Kolieha Bush.
A round table discussion with the artists, open to the public, will be held Wednesday, Oct. 14, at 4 p.m. in the gallery, followed by a reception from 6-8 p.m. For more information, call 503-883-2804 or visit www.linfield.edu/art/gallery.php.
