Oregonian story features Linfield student, illustrates immigrant challenges

December 13, 2012 by Linfield News Team

Political science student Miriam Corona celebrated her letter from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, allowing her to stay in the U.S., and at Linfield College.

Corona is one of many undocumented immigrants in Oregon who were granted two-year work visas through the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. Her acceptance letter brought tears.

That day, she told The Oregonian, was a small victory for immigrants. It also strengthened her passion for immigrant rights, a cause she wants to pursue as a career once she finishes college.

“I felt that a lot of the things I wanted to do had been limited, but not because I didn’t try hard enough,” says Corona, who was brought to the United States as a 9-month-old baby. “I was told I couldn’t do these things because of my documentation. I’m really excited about having options.”

Corona hopes to eventually become a U.S. senator.
