The way that photojournalism reveals insights into contemporary war and conflict will be the focus of a lecture by Robert Hariman, professor and chair of communication studies at Northwestern University.
The lecture, “Watching War Evolve: Photojournalism and New Forms of Violence,” will be held Wednesday, March 6, at 7 p.m., in the Richard and Lucille Ice Auditorium in Melrose Hall at Linfield College.
Hariman will discuss how 21st-century warfare is changing in ways that may appear progressive, but that are actually dangerous and immoral. He will explain how contemporary photojournalism can expose important features of this violence. The lecture will also demonstrate how the changes in war and its representation can be understood by reflecting critically on photography.
Hariman earned his Ph.D. in communication studies from the University of Minnesota. As the chair of the Communication Studies Department and as a communication professor, Hariman teaches courses in rhetorical theory and the critical study of public culture. Hariman’s publications include a book co-authored with John Louis Lucaites, “No Caption Needed: Iconic Photographs, Public Culture and Liberal Democracy,” and the book “Political Style: The Artistry of Power.” Hariman also edited three volumes: “Popular Trials: Rhetoric, Mass Media and the Law,” “Post-Realism: The Rhetorical Turn in International Relations” and “Prudence: Classical Virtue, Postmodern Practice.” He has also written numerous book chapters and journal articles.
The lecture is free and open to the public.
