Economics prof advocates for more investment in students

February 28, 2013 by Linfield News Team

By Linfield News Team

Professor Eric SchuckAll young people deserve the chance to succeed through higher education, Professor Eric Schuck told Oregonian readers in an opinion column.

“Education is the great equalizer,” Schuck says, “but right now falling higher education funding means too many kids of high skills and modest means never get that shot.”

Schuck obtained his education with the help of his local Rotary Club, his church and other organizations, but he also relied heavily on state scholarships.

“Every day I teach with gratitude for the chances given to me, and I do my best to honor the sacrifices made on my behalf by helping my students go as far as they can go, just as was done for me,” he wrote.

The time has come for our society to renew its investment in higher education, and in the future of young people, Schuck says.
