Linfield student composers create music for festival symposium

July 26, 2013 by Linfield News Team

Linfield College student Joe KomarekJosef Komarek ’14 was one of 90 emerging composers from around the world invited to compose an original piece for the Composers Symposium at the Oregon Bach Festival.

The Linfield music composition major wrote “A Cloudburst” for string quartet.

A second Linfield student composer, Zach Gulaboff Davis ’14, was also invited to compose a piece for the symposium (see separate story).

The symposium offered Komarek and Davis an opportunity to learn from composers in residence and engage in a creative collaboration with other artists.

“I’m overwhelmingly excited and thankful I have the opportunity to be here,” Komarek says. “The festival is a great environment, with so many talented individuals. The fact that we get to work with masters of composition is a special opportunity.”

Komarek, from Portland, hopes to continue his composition studies in graduate school. He plays piano and sings baritone in the Linfield Concert Choir.
