Linfield volunteers help restore New Orleans Ninth Ward

August 19, 2013 by Linfield News Team

Linfield student volunteersFive Linfield College students and three staff members were among 113 volunteers around the country who spent a week working to help restore the Ninth Ward of New Orleans, La., still struggling to rebuild after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. See photos.

This is the third year that Linfield has sent representatives to help during Ecumenical Work Week sponsored by the American Baptist Churches Home Mission Society. Volunteers worked with local grassroots organizations on 33 different projects, including helping with construction of the first grocery store to serve the Ninth Ward since Katrina hit. Linfield students and staff installed drywall, painted, landscaped and helped with maintenance in the community garden.

Those participating in the project were: David Massey, chaplain; Dan Fergueson, director of student activities; Lisa Burch, assistant dean of students/director of student life on the Portland Campus; and students McKenna Pyeatt ’13, Cassidy Davis ’14, Caitlyn Rhodes ’13, James Rhodes ’14 and Michelle (Kennedy) Fallas ’13.

Last year, more than 900 students contributed almost 50,000 volunteer hours to local and global communities. The school was recently named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for leadership in civic engagement and service-learning.
