Student-led talks highlight two-year study of legacies of war

May 8, 2014 by Linfield News Team

By Linfield News Team

Linfield CollegeTwo years of study about the impact of war will culminate in a final event, “Legacies of War and the Liberal Arts: Learning from Difference,” Monday, May 19, at 4:30 p.m. in Ice Auditorium in Melrose Hall at Linfield College.

The event, a PLACE Talk, will include a series of short, student-led presentations that have resulted from a two-year examination of the legacies of war through the Linfield Program for Liberal Arts and Civic Engagement (PLACE). Faculty and students from eight courses that relate to Legacies of War will compose the program. In addition to students, faculty participants will include Patrick Cottrell (political science), Barbara Seidman (English), David Fiordalis (religious studies), Tom Love (anthropology), Scott Smith (history), Dawn Nowacki (political science), David Sumner (English) and others.

PLACE is a campus-wide program to promote innovation in liberal arts education and civic engagement through the exploration of thematic connections among modes of thinking and inquiry. PLACE Talks is a forum for stimulating interdisciplinary learning around the thematic content of a given year. The event is designed to appeal to a broad audience, prompt thought about important issues in new ways and consider how to apply this knowledge to some greater good. It’s organized through a collaboration between PLACE faculty fellows and the student-led PLACE Club.

The event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Patrick Cottrell at pcottre@linfield.edu.
