Princeton Review recognizes Linfield in ‘Best in the West’ rankings

September 4, 2014 by Kevin Curry

By Kevin Curry

Pioneer Hall, Linfield CollegeLinfield College has once again been recognized as one of the top colleges in the west by The Princeton Review. The organization also honored the school’s sustainability record by including it in their guide to green colleges.

Best In The West

Linfield College was one of 123 colleges selected for the “Best in the West” portion of The Princeton Review rankings. The rankings are based on campus visits, reports from high school counselors across the country, institutional data and independent student surveys.

According to The Princeton Review survey, students noted Linfield’s “studious atmosphere and excellent support base” as well as the “excellent reputation” the college has for study abroad programs. Students also mentioned how “the small feel of the college allows students to really take advantage of their education” and provides a “personalized education.”

Students also raved about Linfield’s “beautiful campus [that] is just the right size” and the “wonderful atmosphere with happy students and supportive staff.”

Guide to Green Colleges

Linfield College was also chosen to appear in the 2014 edition of “The Princeton Review’s Guide to 332 Green Colleges.” The annual guide is published in conjunction with the U.S. Green Building Council. Launched in 2010, Linfield has appeared in all five editions.

The guide highlights Linfield’s commitment to LEED certification for all capital projects, formal efforts to be proactive on sustainability through the creation of a staff member dedicated to the issue and the President’s Advisory Committee on Environmental Sustainability, and opportunities for students to work on sustainability projects both in and out of the classroom.

Specific green highlights for Linfield over the past year include:

  • Offset 44 percent of its carbon footprint;
  • Added composting in the residence halls, dining hall and some apartments on campus, with the contents going to feed local pigs;
  • Started a new pre-orientation program focused on sustainability;
  • Hosted a sustainable agriculture internship last year for six students;
  • Hosted an alternative spring break program focused on sustainability.
