Students find connections between sound and culture

Linfield College sound classLinfield College students are experiencing sound in a larger context than ever before. A course, What to Listen for in the World, showed students the relationship between sound, environment and culture.

Led by Joan Haaland Paddock, professor of music and director of instrumental activities, students examined differences in the origin of sound, how sound affects culture and how sound can influence our society. Students in the class often shared what certain sounds reminded them of and worked on projects that analyze cultural changes that result in the loss of indigenous languages and music.
