Hillside grant provides equipment for Linfield nursing program

Linfield College Portland CampusHands-on instruction at the Linfield-Good Samaritan School of Nursing will be strengthened, thanks to a grant from the Hillside Foundation.

The $12,500 grant will provide equipment for student training, including a mid-fidelity manikin and SimPad as well as a camera for the high-fidelity simulation lab. In addition to the grant, the Hillside Foundation awarded $2,000 to support the Hillside Foundation Nursing Scholarship. This scholarship will help students further their education and dreams of entering the health care field.

At the Linfield-Good Samaritan School of Nursing, students use mid-fidelity manikins designed for scenario-based training, from basic patient assessment skills to advanced clinical management skills. The manikins allow students to practice monitoring vital signs and other assessments such as breathing as well as administer medications, intravenous therapy and tracheostomy care. Using the SimPad, faculty members create scenarios for students to complete. These scenarios range from integrated head-to-toe assessments to focused treatments for specific complaints or conditions. The SimPad also enables faculty to change the manikins’ responses depending on the care given.

The High-Fidelity Simulation Lab at the Linfield-Good Samaritan School of Nursing has three bays for students to experience and practice lifelike patient care situations. Through reviews and evaluations of actions caught on camera, faculty can point out student strengths and target areas requiring deeper knowledge and understanding. Just as importantly, students are also able to review how they handled themselves during the scenario and gauge the growth in their progress as a health care provider. The new camera will provide new views with the same level of review and assessment for faculty and students.

Linfield’s nursing major is a transfer-only program located in vibrant Northwest Portland. Students experience a community-focused curriculum that integrates nursing theory and clinical experience with courses in the humanities and sciences.
