Sudeep Shrestha’91 of Kathmandu, Nepal, contacted friends to let them know that he and his family are safe after the devastating earthquake that struck the Himalayan nation Saturday.
Shrestha said the quake “hit very hard and has caused a lot of damage around this place. We have only mouth-to-mouth news from rural areas near the epicenter where a lot of damage have been caused by the quake. Some villages and small towns are totally wiped out. We will probably get a clearer picture of the extension of damage by next week as communication has also been interrupted.”
His email, sent Monday, April 27, said, “We are still feeling tremors regularly and there was again a 6.7 magnitude earthquake yesterday afternoon and 5.5 last night. So we are not staying indoors as we do not know when and how intense the next one will be. Last night it rained and made things worse. All of us (are) sleeping outside and people have set up tents where possible. A lot of damage has been done and people are still trying to find persons buried under the rubble…. There’s no electricity and Internet is not available in most places. We are trying to keep our communication servers and internet services running, so that people can communicate.”
Shrestha is the chief systems integrator with Syntegrate in Kathmandu.
