July 23, 2015 by Kevin Curry

By Kevin Curry

CSPAN Screengrab-smCSPAN’s American History TV covered three presentations during the 2015 Frederick Douglass Forum on Law, Rights, and Justice at Linfield College. The forum marked the 50th anniversary of the classic debate between James Baldwin and William F. Buckley on the motion “The American Dream is at the expense of the American Negro.” It also included remarks from distinguished academics and authors from across the United States.

Below are brief descriptions and archived links to the three presentations CSPAN broadcast.

James Baldwin and Black Lives: Eddie Glaude, professor of religion and African American Studies at Princeton University, presented the keynote address,“James Baldwin and #Black Lives Matter.”

James Baldwin and American Political Thought: Lawrie Balfour, a professor in the Department of Politics at the University of Virginia, and Susan McWIlliams, a professor in the Politics Department at Pamona College, spoke about the 1965 debate between James Baldwin and William F. Buckley. Moderated by Linfield Professor Barbara Seidman.

William F. Buckley and American Conservatism: Patrick Allit, Emory University history professor, and author William Hogeland presented contrasting views of William F. Buckley, conservatism and race during the 1960s and ‘70s. Moderated by Linfield Professor Nick Buccola.

Additional information on the forum and speakers, including links to other lectures archived on Linfield’s Digital Commons, can be found here.
