Linfield College students are participating in service events within the McMinnville community during hunger and homelessness week, Nov. 14-20.
The national week of service, sponsored by the Linfield College of Community Engagement and Service (CES), began Saturday, Nov. 14, at 7 a.m. when volunteers helped with a breakfast at the McMinnville Cooperative Ministries. Students cooked food and served local community members.
Other activities are being held throughout the week including a trivia night on Monday, Nov. 16, at 6 p.m. in 201 Riley Hall with questions focusing on hunger, homelessness and poverty. The grand prize winner may choose a local nonprofit organization to which CES will donate $50.
Students can volunteer at the St. Barnabas Soup Kitchen on Wednesday, Nov. 18, at 3:45 p.m. Students will set up, serve, cook and clean, in addition to interacting with patrons of the soup kitchen. St. Barnabas provides meals and serves as a community gathering space.
On Thursday, Nov. 19, at 6 p.m. in 201 Riley Hall, students can paint bird houses to benefit the Yamhill Community Action Partnership (YCAP). The cost to participate is $4.
Throughout the week an all-campus canned food drive will be held to benefit YCAP. Large barrels will be placed in Mahaffey Hall, Fred Meyer Lounge, Jane Failing Hall, Withnell, Dillin Hall and Potter Hall to collect canned and non-perishable food.
