Students tackle service projects during Alternative Spring Break

March 28, 2016 by Linfield News Team

By Linfield News Team

Alternative Spring Break 2016A few Linfield College students and faculty spent their spring breaks participating in a life-changing week of service.

Alternative Spring Break is a yearly service-learning opportunity provided by Linfield College. Paired with a local nonprofit, students had the opportunity to participate in meaningful service while developing their leadership skills, expanding their knowledge about social issues and experiencing the importance of being an active citizen.

This year, students traveled to three different locations – Portland, Tacoma, Wash., and Thorne Bay, Alaska. In Portland, students partnered with YMCA and focused on youth empowerment by participating in activities such as repainting youth centers and fixing up library reading nooks. The students that traveled to Tacoma worked at a Habitat for Humanity site while learning about how to alleviate poverty and homelessness. In Thorne Bay, the group of students learned about conservation and sustainability with the US Forest Service.

Students will share their spring break experiences during presentations on Thursday, April 14, at 4 p.m. in 222 T.J. Day Hall.

This was the 12th year that Linfield has hosted Alternative Spring Break. Past trips have included locations closer to home such as alleviating poverty and homelessness in McMinnville, as well as foreign trips such as working with Habitat for Humanity in Honduras and Guatemala.

For more information about Alternative Spring Break, contact Joni Tonn, director of the Office of Community Engagement and Service, at 503-883-2636 or jtonn@linfield.edu.
