From Newberg to Norway, Linfield junior studies abroad

Charlie Burnett '17Getting used to different dialects, languages and cultures has been the biggest adjustment to living abroad in Olso, Norway, according to Linfield College junior Charlie Burnett of Newberg.

Burnett, who is studying at the Olso and Akershus University College spring semester, has also had the opportunity to travel while abroad. She has gone to Tromsø, Norway, to see the northern lights, as well as to Denmark and London.

“When I travelled to Tromsø, I was with eight of my good friends that I met here, each from a different country, and we stayed in hyttes (Norwegian style cabins) and drove rental cars around the beautiful islands,” said Burnett. “We saw the northern lights and the most beautiful snowy beaches and mountains.”

Burnett was featured in an article about student housing for exchange students on the Olso and Akershus University College of Applied Sciences website.

“It’s like living with my best friend: small and cozy,” said Burnett, who moved into her student accommodation in February. “First come, first served,” she said. Burnett specifically applied to live in the student apartments in Hans Ross gate as her first choice because the University College is only a 15-minute walk away.

“Residence life is very different here in Oslo than at Linfield,” said Burnett. “We have very little interaction with the residence life office and there is no campus police/security. It’s almost as though the residence office is disconnected from the school.”

Burnett is studying exercise science/pre-physical therapy at Linfield and will return home at the end of June.
