The young artists and international faculty of the Castleman Quartet Program will present four free programs of chamber music in August, during the program’s inaugural summer-in-residence at Linfield College. The performances will be held in the Delkin Recital Hall in the Vivian Bull Music Center and include:
Thursday, Aug. 4, 7:30 p.m. — Quartet program faculty will perform instrumental duos
Wednesday, Aug. 10, 7:30 p.m. — Program founder Charles Castleman will perform violin sonatas of Beethoven, Brahms and Ravel together with Linfield piano Professor Albert Kim
Thursday, Aug. 11, 3 p.m. — Quartet program students will play an afternoon concert of solo works
Friday, Aug. 12, 7:30 p.m. — Grand finale concert with three student piano quintets performing masterworks by Elgar, Dvorak and Faure
Founded by Charles Castleman in 1970, the Castleman Quartet Program is an intensive and extensive workshop in solo and chamber performance. Now in its 46th season, the Castleman Quartet Program is held at S.U.N.Y. Fredonia and this summer, for the first time, at Linfield College.
In the words of Yo-Yo Ma, “The Quartet Program is the best program of its kind that I know. Every young person not only learns many of the great works written for this genre, but they must also learn how to work with each other and to communicate the most personal thoughts to their colleagues. No one emerges from the program without great love of music and better knowledge of interpersonal relationships. I view this program as a training ground for lifemanship.”
Castleman, one of the world’s most active performers/pedagogues on the violin, has been soloist with the orchestras of Philadelphia, Boston, Brisbane, Chicago, Hong Kong, Moscow, Mexico City, New York, San Francisco, Seoul and Shanghai. A medalist at Tchaikovsky and Brussels, his self-learned Jongen Concerto is included in the CD set of the 17 best prize-winning performances of the Brussels competition’s 50-year history. Professor of violin at the Frost School of Music, University of Miami, Castleman has conducted masterclasses in Kiev, London, Montreux, Salzburg, Vienna, Shanghai, Seoul, Tokyo, Auckland, Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney, Toronto, Vancouver and more than 50 U.S. universities.
The concert is free and open to the public. For more information, contact the Linfield Music Department, 503-883-2275 or visit www.linfield.edu/arts.
