Madeline Rice ’18 is channeling her creativity to adorn the walls and windows of Starbucks with chalk art.
“Last year I watched in awe as the girl who did the chalk drawings created gorgeous pieces. When I heard she graduated and Starbucks needed someone to replace her, I jumped at the opportunity,” said Rice.
Rice, a math major and visual art minor from Bend, said she gained most of her creativity from her parents. At home, she learned to work with chalk alongside her mom, creating pieces on the chalkboard that her dad built and mounted on a wall.
With the onset of the holiday season, Rice has been busily turning Linfield’s on-campus Starbucks into a cozy winter wonderland by drawing snowflakes on the light fixtures, candy canes on backs of the chairs and holiday scenes on the windows.
Although she gets requests for artwork from the Starbucks employees, Rice is able to make most of her own choices and run wild with creativity.
“I draw a lot of my inspiration from what others have done, taking some of their concepts and adding my own whimsical twist,” said Rice. “It’s easy for me to take a blank wall and imagine an elaborate castle scene from Harry Potter, complete with fire breathing Hungarian Horntail.”
