Ty Marshall, Linfield College professor of theatre arts, will present “Scenographic Illusions II: Designing for the Theatre” on Wednesday, May 10, at 7 p.m. in the Marshall Theatre in Ford Hall at Linfield.
In the lecture, Marshall will explore the process he employs to create scenographic illusions that provide an environment in which a play comes to life. He will focus on designs created for Linfield plays produced in Marshall Theatre.
Marshall has been a member of the theatre program at Linfield since 1987. In addition to teaching classes, he is the director of the theatre and a resident designer. He creates the scenic and lighting designs for most of the program’s productions and on occasion designs for theatres in Portland.
He has received numerous awards for his work, including the Kennedy Center medallion, considered the most prestigious regional award given by KCACTF and one of the great honors in theatre education, several Meritorious Achievements Awards from the Kennedy Center/American College Theatre Festival (KC/ACTF) and the Horace Robinson President’s Award from the Northwest Drama Conference. At Linfield he received the Burlington Northern Foundation Faculty Achievement Award for Outstanding Teaching Effectiveness in 1990, the Samuel H. Graf Faculty Achievement Award in 2003 and the Julie Olds and Thomas Hellie Creative Achievement Award in 2016.
He is an active member of the United States Institute for Theatre Technology. His recent research has led him to join departmental colleagues and students as a member of the team working on the ongoing project “Launching Through the Surf: The Dory Fleet of Pacific City.” The project includes the development of a permanent historical archive for the fleet housed in DigitalCommons@Linfield and numerous other presentations.
