The internationally known teacher, lecturer, diversity trainer and recipient of the National Mental Health Association Award for Excellence in Education Jane Elliott will be at Linfield College to talk about racism and today’s campus climate.
Elliott’s talk, “Power, Perception and Prejudice,” will be held Thursday, Feb. 22, at 7 p.m. in the Richard and Lucille Ice Auditorium in Melrose Hall on campus. This lecture is free and open to the public.
Elliott will help attendees recognize, identify and appreciate the differences on which power is assigned, and some of the ways we are conditioned to develop perceptions.
Elliott is a former third-grade schoolteacher and current anti-racism activist and educator, as well as feminist and LGBT activist. She is best known for her “Blue Eyes–Brown Eyes” exercise, which provides a framework for teaching about racism. She first conducted this exercise for her class in the aftermath of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s assassination.
