—Students who want to work in the robust wine or sports industries and those looking to explore today’s increasingly interconnected world have new options at Linfield College—
Linfield College faculty members approved the addition of three new majors and three new areas of focus starting in the fall of 2018. Students will now have the option to major in Global Cultural Studies, Sport Management and Wine Studies, in addition to Linfield’s 51 existing majors.
The new majors represent growing fields based in Linfield’s core liberal arts curriculum, and will prepare students to pursue professional opportunities and/or graduate studies.
The Global Cultural Studies major is for students who want to explore the interconnectedness of countries and peoples in an increasingly globalized world. Students will develop language skills in Chinese, French, German, Japanese or Spanish. They will examine literature, cinema or other cultural works in these languages and investigate their broader political and social contexts.
Linfield’s Sport Management major is designed to provide students with foundational business, communication, economics, philosophy and health and human performance knowledge and skills, and apply them to the sports industry. The estimated size of the U.S. sports industry – sporting goods and sports apparel, but also teams, events, marketing and media related to sports – is $498 billion, making it the sixth-largest industry in the United States.
The Wine Studies major is the first interdisciplinary liberal arts bachelor’s degree in wine education in the United States. Unlike grape-growing or winemaking pre-professional programs, this major incorporates a core liberal arts curriculum as well as the historical, geographical and environmental aspects of viticulture and every step of making, selling and marketing wine. It will prepare students for jobs in all parts of the wine industry in Oregon and elsewhere.
The Linfield faculty also approved new areas of focus to existing majors. Environmental Studies majors will have the option to focus on Environmental Humanities, and Physics majors will be able to concentrate in either Engineering or Materials Science.
