MJ New Quartet to perform at Linfield

November 14, 2018 by Christian Feuerstein

By Christian Feuerstein

MJ New QuartetThe MJ New Quartet, a virtuoso quartet who revisit the introspective elegance and sophisticated soundscape of the Modern Jazz Quartet (MJQ), will perform at Linfield College.

On Wednesday, Nov. 28, the MJ New Quartet will bring their blend of classical and jazz to the Richard and Lucille Ice Auditorium in Melrose Hall at 7 p.m. Led by jazz pianist Darrell Grant, the group offers thoughtful interpretations and explorations of MJQ classics such as “Django,” “Skating in Central Park” and “Odds Against Tomorrow,” as well as lesser-known pieces.

Audiences are likely to hear Bach smoothly segue into Antonio Carlos Jobim, an impressionistic of a jazz standard, a reimagined Chopin étude or a four-part improvisation on a Beethoven sonata theme.

Besides Grant, the quartet includes bassist/composer Marcus Shelby, vibraphonist Mike Horsfall and drummer Carlton Jackson.

The performance is sponsored by Linfield Lively Arts and Friends of Chamber Music. Linfield Lively Arts music series features guest artists in concerts and in outreach activities, including master classes, open rehearsals and “Meet the Musicians” events. Friends of Chamber Music, a non-profit organization, is dedicated to presenting the highest quality chamber ensembles in concert and providing educational outreach to further chamber music in our community. Friends of Chamber Music is honored with the distinction of being the longest non-interrupted chamber music series in Oregon and the sixth longest running in the country.

The concert is $10 for general admission and free for K-12 and Linfield College students. For more information, call 503-883-2275 or visit linfield.edu/arts.
