Faculty recital features works by Hummel and Copland

Abigail SperlingAbigail Sperling, instructor of flute at Linfield College, will present “Watercolors,” a faculty recital at Linfield, featuring music from Hummel, Gaubert and Copland. The recital will be held Thursday, Feb. 28, at 7 p.m. in the Delkin Recital Hall at the Vivian A. Bull Music Center. 

Guest musicians include Victoria Wolff-Zevallos on cello and Susan McDaniel on piano. Works include J. N. Hummel’s Trio Op. 78 and Philipe Gaubert’s Trois Aquarelles. Duo by Aaron Copland for flute and piano, and the solo work Circumambulation by Yan Maresz, will also be performed. 

Sperling teaches flute at both Linfield and Chemeketa Community College and is currently the guest lecturer in flute at Oregon State University. She received her doctorate from the University of Auckland in New Zealand and is a well-known as a performer of contemporary music – particularly that by New Zealand composers – in addition to the classical repertoire canon. Sperling was recently named an Oregon Arts Commission Fellow and was a featured presenter at the 2018 National Flute Association Convention and the Greater Portland Flute Society Flute Fair. She is secretary of the Greater Portland Flute Society and a reviewer for the National Flute Association journal, “The Flutist Quarterly.”
