Smoke signals in the Oak Grove

April 30, 2010 by Linfield News Team

By Linfield News Team

Linfield College students pitched a large Native American tipi in the campus Oak Grove on April 30 and hosted a ceremony, which included Native flute music and a blessing.

“I think it’s safe to say there will not be another tipi on campus anytime soon, although I would love to see about 30,” said art Instructor Totem Shriver.

Students painted the tipi, a gift from Kathleen Wallace, a local member of the Lakota Sioux Tribe, and the blessing and music were offered by Jan Michael Looking Wolf.

“We are one tribe,” said Looking Wolf. “There is a place beyond all religions where everyone’s opinion is equally important. Diversity isn’t about everyone agreeing on things, but about agreeing that our hearts have the same significance.”

Students are invited to camp out this week.
