The Linfield Theatre Program’s 99th season of plays concludes with the dynamic, sexy and shocking Tony Award-winning musical “Cabaret.”
Presented in collaboration with Linfield’s Department of Music, the production includes book by Joe Masteroff, music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb (1998 version). Stage direction is by Janet Gupton, musical direction is by Dana Libonati and choreography is by Eve Brindis.
The musical is set in the waning days of Germany’s Weimar Republic as the Nazi Party grows in influence, and challenges fascist aesthetics and ideology. Featuring an American writer, an eccentric nightclub performer and the charismatic Emcee of the hedonistic Kit Kat Klub, “Cabaret” examines the sinister side of revolutions, and the ways in which racial hate is enabled or resisted.
Performances are May 2-4 and 9-11 at 7:30 p.m. with a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday, May 5. Two post-show round tables will also be held:
- Thursday, May 2 — “Even the Orchestra is Beautiful: Aesthetics Inside and Outside the Cabaret” will examine how aesthetics contribute to the play’s political messages. Panelists include Lindsey Mantoan, assistant professor of theatre and resident dramaturg; Ronni Lacroute, Linfield College trustee; Brian Winkenweder, professor of art history; and Dana Libonati, music director of “Cabaret.”
- Thursday, May 9 — “The Musical as History: Cabaret’s Intervention into Public Thought” considers what it means for a musical to represent history, and for “Cabaret” to reshape public understanding of the prelude to war. Panelists include Lindsey Mantoan, assistant professor of theatre and resident dramaturg; Rachel Schley, assistant professor of history; and Angela Farr Schiller, assistant professor of theatre and performance studies at Kennesaw State University.
