March 4, 2021 by Kathy Foss

Podcast microphone in front of computerLinfield University’s Theatre Program continues its 2020-21 season – called “A Season Like No Other” – with “Podcast Productions,” a series of student-led podcasts. Each episode has been conceived or written, cast, directed, rehearsed, recorded and edited by Linfield students. The episodes will be released on Fridays at noon, starting on March 5, on most major listening apps at https://anchor.fm/linfield-theatre.

“Podcast Productions” includes:

“I Wanna Be in the (Class) Room Where it Happens,” conceived by Hannah Curry and Rachel Goines: The two episodes, uploaded March 5 and April 15, explore what it is like to change one’s major to theatre later in college, and the accompanying challenges and successes that come in doing so. The hosts discuss their personal experiences and interview other theatre students and alumni.

“The Button Man,” written by Caroline Calvano and directed by Robert Santos: “The Button Man,” an original play by creative writing student Calvano, had its stage debut during January Term 2020. Calvano has reworked her original script into an audio play, directed by Santos, a senior majoring in theatre arts. “The Button Man” chronicles the experiences of Rhode Island native Pax Jones throughout his first semester at UCSB, during which he finds himself the puppet of a bodiless virtual entity (the Phisherman) who takes control of him through a video game and forces him to torture both the residents of his hometown and his college campus for reasons unknown. Episodes will be uploaded on March 12 and 19.

“The Deal of a Lifetime,” written by Ellie Gosset and Helika Campbell and directed by Alexandria Hunter: This original two-act audio play, uploaded on April 2 and 9, follows the trials and tribulations of seven people trapped in a small electronics store, while a monster of unimaginable horror lingers just outside the rolling gate. As the paranoia escalates, so does the tension between the unlucky customers, causing them to turn on one another. “The Deal of a Lifetime” is a tale that depicts the lethality of capitalism and materialistic-dependent love, revealing the true monster to be far beyond the control of the characters themselves.
