The Mexican Tetzkatlipoka tradition of Nawi Ollin Teotl, or the movement of four energies, is on display throughout September at Linfield University. “Xiuhmekatl,” a new exhibition by multidisciplinary artist Lucia Torres runs from Sept. 6 – Oct. 2 at the Linfield Gallery located in the James F. Miller Fine Arts Center. The gallery is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 12-5 p.m. on Saturdays.
“Xiuhmekatl” explores the relationship between women, community, art, music, healing, identity and cultural heritage through an interweaving of photo embroidery, music and more. Nawi Ollin Teotl is a concept based in four fundamental categories—the indispensable, the necessary, the desirable and the excellent—which together create an equilibrium or harmony. In “Xiuhmekatl,” Torres uses these four divisions to define an individual’s action in the world.
The exhibition opens with an artist talk with Torres at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 8 at the Delkin Recital Hall in the Vivian Bull Music Center. A reception will follow in the Linfield Gallery. Face coverings are required for all attendees.
Linfield is also celebrating the exhibition with a workshop, concert and fandango – a traditional community gathering with music and dancing – on Saturday, Sept. 11. All events are free and open to the public and include:
- Workshop, 5 p.m. at the Linfield Gallery: Torres will lead a fandango workshop.
- Semilla Concert, 6 p.m. in the Linfield Gallery courtyard: Enjoy urban folk music from Semilla, a musical ensemble from Mexico City of which Torres is a member.
- Fandango, 7 p.m. in the Linfield Gallery courtyard: Join the fandango! This community party features dancing, tamales and enjoying rhythms of traditional music from Veracruz.
