The artwork of Patricia Vázquez on display at Linfield Gallery

March 17, 2022 by Eric Howald

By Eric Howald

The artwork of Patricia Vasquez will be featured in the Linfield Gallery March 30 through May 6.

The Linfield University Gallery’s next exhibit, “Ku beeta’al bej ikil a xíimba (Andando hacemos el camino),” opens March 30 and will feature work by Patricia Vázquez, a multidisciplinary artist.

Vázquez will discuss her work at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 30 and a reception will follow. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturdays from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. The exhibit runs through May 6.

The exhibit features a retrospective of Vázquez’s last 15 years as she wrestled with her artistic identity, contributions to the world at large and the political aspects of art.

“For a long time, I couldn’t believe I could be an artist as I had to contend with doubts, fears and contradicting inner messages,” Vázquez said. “The work offered in this exhibition is the result of years intently developing skills and language, and of learning to trust my capacities, sensibility, and intuition.”

She uses a variety of media to carry out her research: painting, printmaking, video, exhibitions, music and socially-engaged art projects. Her work has been shown at the Portland Art Museum, the Reece Museum, the Paragon Gallery and the Houston Art League, but also in spaces such as apartment complexes, community-based organizations and schools. She is the recipient of the 2013 Arlene Schnitzer Visual Arts Prize and has received support from the Ford Foundation, Regional Arts and Culture Council (RACC), the Portland Institute of Contemporary Art (PICA), Portland’s Jade and Midway Districts, Oregon Humanities and the Oregon Community Foundation. In addition to producing her own work, Vázquez teaches undergraduate and graduate courses at Portland State University

The gallery is in the James F. Miller Fine Arts Center on the Linfield University McMinnville Campus. To reach the gallery from 99W, turn east on Keck Drive at the McMinnville Market Center (Albertson’s) in south McMinnville. Turn right at the first street onto Library Court. The gallery is in the second building on the left, Building B. Free parking is available on the street and in the lot west of Nicholson Library.
