One-person plays about Muslim women and Frederick Douglass come to Linfield’s campuses

March 31, 2022 by Kathy Foss

By Kathy Foss

Two compelling one-person plays will be performed at Linfield University this April. “Unveiled,” a one-woman show about Muslim women, takes the Marshall Theatre stage on the McMinnville campus on April 9 and the Portland campus on April 11. “The Starry Road to Freedom,” a one-man show about Frederick Douglass, comes to the McMinnville campus on April 12. Each of these productions is free, and seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Parking for guests on both campuses is free.

The critically acclaimed “Unveiled,” examines racism, culture, love and religion. The show is performed by Chicago-based writer and actress Rohina Malik and tells the story of four Muslim women who uncover what lies beneath the veil, while serving tea.

Malik will perform in McMinnville at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 9 in the Marshall Theatre within Ford Hall. The 60-minute performance will be followed by a post-show discussion. The Linfield University Portland Campus (2900 NE 132nd Avenue) hosts a performance of “Unveiled” at 11:30 a.m. Monday, April 11 in Building 2, Lecture Hall H01.

“Unveiled” is sponsored by the Lacroute Initiative, the Big Bridge Theatre Consortium, Linfield’s Department of Theatre and Communication Arts, the Linfield Gender and Sexuality Studies Program and the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust, dedicated to strengthening democracy, civility and the common good.

In “The Starry Road to Freedom,” Phil Darius Wallace performs numerous characters in Fredrick Douglass’ life. The performance includes music, dancing, singing, monologues and poetry. The most powerful message delivered in the story is how education completely transformed Douglass’ life.

Wallace will perform “The Starry Road to Freedom” at 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 12 in the Marshall Theatre in Ford Hall.

Wallace is an actor, speaking coach and director from Michigan. He is currently a company member of Playhouse On the Square and Voices of The South. He directed his own movie, “100 Lives,” which is available on Amazon and has performed one-man shows about Douglass and Martin Luther King Jr.

“The Starry Road to Freedom” is sponsored by the Lacroute Art Series, Linfield’s Department of Political Science and the Frederick Douglass Forum on Law, Rights and Justice.

COVID-19 protocols at Marshall Theatre

Due to the intimate performance space of Marshall Theatre, all audience members attending the April 9 or 12 events in McMinnville will be asked to provide proof of vaccination (including booster shots for those over the age of 12). Audience members unable to be vaccinated will be required to show proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR test taken within 72 hours prior to the performance or a negative COVID-19 antigen test taken within 24 hours prior to the performance. There will be full seating capacity without distancing between parties.

Face coverings are strongly encouraged. More information on Linfield’s COVID-19 policy for theatre events can be found at linfield.edu/covid.
