Student receives pin at May 2022 pinning ceremonyThe Linfield University-Good Samaritan School of Nursing honors its newest graduating class in its August 2022 Pinning Ceremony at 4 p.m. Friday, Aug. 19. Tickets are required for the in-person event at the Parkrose High School Theatre. The ceremony will also be livestreamed on the Linfield University YouTube channel.

The ceremony honors 86 graduates earning their Bachelor of Science in Nursing. This includes students completing an accelerated BSN program and those finishing in the RN to BSN program.

“This August’s graduates are shining examples of lifelong learning, as they represent students who have either obtained their BSN as second degree students or nurses who are advancing their education and obtaining their BSN,” said Paul Smith, dean of the School of Nursing. “The faculty and staff are proud of these graduates and excited for what they will accomplish in the years ahead.”

The August 2022 Pinning Ceremony marks the first for Smith in the role as dean of the School of Nursing. Smith was appointed as dean earlier this summer having served as associate dean since 2018. He began his career at Linfield in 2007 as an adjunct clinical faculty member, becoming a full-time faculty member in 2014. He previously worked as a faculty member and program coordinator at Chemeketa Community College, as well an RN in Oregon and Georgia.

“This pinning ceremony is special to me as it is the first one in my new role as the dean,” Smith said. “I have been fortunate to have taught some of the graduates and I know what an amazing group this is. I have no doubt that they are going to be remarkable nurses.”

Pinning ceremonies mark the completion of a student’s nursing education. Each graduate receives a unique school pin that links graduates to their specific program.

The Linfield University-Good Samaritan School of Nursing was created when Linfield College and the Good Samaritan Hospital’s nursing education program merged in 1982. The Good Samaritan nursing program traces its roots to 1890 and founder Emily Loveridge. With this heritage, Linfield’s program is the oldest continuously operated nursing school in the Pacific Northwest. The School of Nursing currently offers undergraduate and graduate nursing education, online and in person at the Linfield University Portland Campus.
