Linfield University will host its first-ever NW Media Fest Nov. 9 and 11 on the McMinnville campus. Speakers include a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, the editor of the Oregonian, a celebrity chef and more.
“This is going to be an amazing opportunity for students to hear from some of the most accomplished people working in entertainment, news and gaming,” said Kevin Curry, assistant professor of journalism and media studies. “Media encompasses much more than just the news, and we wanted to celebrate a variety of areas it encompasses.”
Wednesday, Nov. 9 focuses on journalism while Friday, Nov. 11 brings a full slate of entertainment, gaming and comics. Originally, Thursday Nov. 10 was going to revolve around music programming from Dontae Winslow, a celebrated composer and trumpeter who conducted, arranged and scored the 2022 Academy Awards, but his appearance has been delayed until later this school year.
Guest speakers include video game writer Liz Albl, culinary icon Susan Feniger, Oregonian editor Therese Bottomly, two time Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Steve Kurkjian, screenplay writer Liz Lachman and more.
The event was first envisioned by Cindy (Macho) Johnson ‘81, and her husband, Neville, both of whom are entertainment attorneys in Los Angeles.
“The idea was to bring some really tremendous speakers to campus to inform and educate students,” said Vice President for University Advancement Joseph Hunter. “They’ve helped us bring in national-level talent, and all of our speakers are forgoing thousands of dollars in honorariums because they want to help Linfield students.”
For more information and a full schedule, visit linfield.edu/nwmediafest; this event is free and open to the public, but some events are exclusive to Linfield community members with ID. NW Media Fest is put on thanks to the generosity of the Johnsons and the Bladine family.
