The Linfield Review receives nine awards for excellence from the Pacific Northwest Association of Journalism Educators

The Linfield Review, Linfield University’s independent student newspaper, garnered nine awards in the 2022-23 Pacific Northwest Association of Journalism Educators annual competition, including two first place honors.

“The Linfield Review staff worked hard this year to bring the stories of Linfield to life,” said Anna Frazier, editor-in-chief for the 2022-23 school year. “I am so proud of each and every one of the team, regardless of whether they won an award. I know that next year’s editor-in-chief, Riley Omonaka, will continue this momentum for an even better year!”

Kate Walkup, a journalism and media studies major from Eugene, received first place in the Best Sports Story division. Nathan Herde, an exercise science major from Tacoma, Washington, earned first in the Best Sports Photo division. Both graduated from Linfield in May 2023.

The Linfield Review competed in the Four-Year Program Division, which included newspapers from Pacific Northwest colleges and universities, regardless of enrollment size. The Linfield Review and its staff received the following awards:

First place:

Best Sports Story: Kate Walkup for her story on the suspension of Coach Rosenburg
Best Sports Photo: Nathan Herde for his steeplechase photo

Second place:

Best Sports Story: McKenna Mills and Parker Wright for their story on The Streak
Best Sports Photo: JJ Anderson for his photo of men’s basketball tipoff
General News: Anna Frazier for her story on the luau

Third place:

Best Feature: Anna Frazier for her story on two local winemakers
Best Review: Riley Omonaka review of Linfield Theatre’s production Dr. Voynich
Best Photo Essay: The Linfield Review for a photo essay on study abroad
Best Headline: The Linfield Review for the headline “Is there a snake in my boot? No, it’s Puss! This movie haunts me in the best way”

Founded in 1896, The Linfield Review is one of the oldest college newspapers in the Pacific Northwest. It prides itself on a long-standing tradition of journalistic integrity and excellence, and its mission of being a vehicle for free expression. The award-winning publication regularly earns awards for excellence in student journalism, with recent honors coming from the Society of Professional Journalists, Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association and the PNAJE.
