Linfield University embraces Oregon Opportunity Grant, Oregon Tribal Student Grant funding increase

August 1, 2023 by Kelly Williams Brown

By Kelly Williams Brown

Linfield University joins the Oregon Alliance of Independent Colleges and Universities (the Alliance) in applauding the Oregon Legislature’s passage of House Bill 5025. The bill dramatically increases funding for Oregon Opportunity Grant (OOG), which provides need-based financial aid.

The legislature approved a $100 million increase in Oregon Opportunity Grants, bringing the total budget to $308.4 million. The bill also allocated $24.2 million to the Oregon Tribal Student Grant, which is open to enrolled members of one of the nine federally recognized tribes in Oregon. Linfield University, like most accredited private colleges in Oregon, accepts these grants.

President Miles K. Davis said he is grateful for the state’s commitment to making higher education accessible to all.

“Linfield University strives to make a world-class education available to students in Oregon and beyond,” he said, noting that about half of the incoming first-year undergraduates are first-generation students. “Higher education is both a pathway to social mobility and an informed, engaged citizenry. I thank the Oregon Legislature for prioritizing and funding Oregon’s future.”

Alliance President Brent Wilder underlined the unique benefits private colleges and universities can offer to lower- and middle-income students.

“We know the independent sector plays a key role in serving students and fulfilling the state’s talent and economic development needs, and we are working vigorously to ensure our contributions are better understood,” he said. “We look forward to working with the Governor and Legislature to ensure all Oregon students have access to affordable higher education that best fits their distinct and individual needs.”
