Linfield University is the No. 1 liberal arts college or university in Oregon, according to Washington Monthly’s 2023 College Guide and Rankings, and No. 9 in the nation for earnings performance.
Washington Monthly ranks four-year schools based on their contribution to the public good in three broad categories: social mobility, research and providing opportunities for public service. The university jumped in the national overall ranking 54, up from last year’s No. 66 and 2021’s 112th spot.
Linfield was also included in Washington Monthly’s 2023 Best Bang for the Buck in the West. This specialized list ranks schools according to “how well they help non-wealthy students attain marketable degrees at affordable prices.”
Other accolades from the magazine include:
- Top 20 liberal arts college in nation for participation in AmeriCorps and The Peace Corps (No. 17)
- Top 100 in social mobility (No. 70)

Washington Monthly isn’t the only national publication recognizing Linfield’s excellence. Colleges of Distinction, a well-known guide for college-bound students, named Linfield a 2023-24 College of Distinction in four categories, with specific accolades for the School of Nursing, the School of Business, the Department of Education and Career Development.
