Homecoming Weekend 2023 drew Linfield University alumni by the hundreds from around the country to McMinnville for three days of celebrations, sports, wine, science and memories.
“It was a phenomenal Homecoming Weekend — the largest we’ve had since the pandemic,” said Debbie Harmon Ferry ’90, director of alumni and parent engagement. “We were thrilled to be able to share so many exciting new aspects of Linfield, like the Acorn to Oak Wine Experience and the new W.M. Keck Science Center, but also take time to just be together, eat, drink, celebrate and enjoy what makes Linfield so special.”
Events began Friday with a tasting at the newly opened Acorn to Oak Wine Experience, the student-run tasting room on Third Street. Distinguished Alumnus of the Year Brent Barry ’96 spoke on his experience of leading the Phoenix-Talent School District through 2020’s wildfires, while Outstanding Young Alumnus Rakshya Khatiwada ’08 presented about her research into dark matter and quantum technologies.
That evening, familiar faces gathered in Nicholson Library for Linfield’s Finest, where Distinguished Nursing Alumnus of the Year Kristen (Abbott) Anderson ’83 and Alumni Service Award winner Dana (Dancer) Vandecoevering ’83 were celebrated alongside Barry and Khatiwada.
The next morning, a science-minded crowd gathered in the quad outside the updated science complex, where physics professor Michael Crosser explained the annular eclipse that was, in fact, happening, albeit behind a dense cloud cover.
Meanwhile, on Streak Street, alumni and students mingled over games of cornhole, browsed Linfield gear, noshed on burritos and barbecue and, most importantly, cheered the Wildcats to victory over the George Fox Bruins, thus extending The Streak another year.
